You have a housing development board unit (HDB) in Bishan ready to sale or lease and you want to renovate your property into an open-plan living because it has become incredibility popular this days. While open-plan is a good idea for hosting dinner parties giving the illusion of space and opennes but you may want to consider the pontential cons before your contractor execute to renovate the open-plan space.
Here are the reasons why you should reconsider an open-plan home:
Sight Line
Open-plan configuration may look like a great venue for entertaining, it can cause anyone who is house pround a bit of discomfort knowing that their guests can see the dirty pots and pans left behind during the cooking session. Plus you might be the kind of person who prefers to battle unwind if you can spot a pile of dishes in the sink, and with nowhere else to put them. Out of sight, out of mind is not an option.
Lack Of Privacy
Open-plan living is great for fostering a sense of togetherness and sharing. At times, you may want to runaway from the 'openness'. It can often prove to be difficult when there is very little privacy on offer apart from your bedroom or bathroom. Similarly, if you are trying to get some work done, making important phone call or even have a private conversation. The open-plan arrangement won't lend itself to accommodating you in those situations. Furthermore, if you prefer to be in peace and quite or pleasure of lazing on the couch alone in front of the TV, open-plan living is the wrong choice for you.
Noise Level
You know things can get lound especially when you are in a family, what's even worse is that when everyone is the same room. Add a range of in-use electronic devices to the mix and noise level is close enough for the neighbour to call the police. According to science, sound travels much easier in an open-plan environment, especially those with hard wood floors and high ceilings. If you are opting for an open-plan space, be sure to use rugs and/or fabric wall hangings to combat any echoes on unwanted acoustic noise otherwise you might want to find yourself wanting to escape the cacophony but with little options as to where to go. You can find ways to reduce the noice pollution here.
Temperature Control
It is very difficult to control temperature in big and open space. It can be costly to heat or to cool depending on your seasonal needs, so this should be kept in mind when viewing an open-plan space or building with the intention of going the open-plan route. If you are ;iving in an area where the temperature are extreme, this could be an option to opt for an open-plan space with few sub-divided areas to keep costs down and ease of managing the high temperature.
Storage and Display
Take the opportunity to store and display items that is greatly reduced when there is less available wall and storage space with an open-plan space. This also often means that your home constantly needs to be kept in order to avoid it looking mess, cluttered or untidy. On the other hand, when you are trying to make sure everything is kept pristine and proper in place, your space may runs the risk of looking sterile and unlived in. Therefore, a lot of though and effort needs to go into striking a balance between these two extremes.
In all, open-plan living is not for everyone and it all comes down to a personal preference and what works best for you. It is really worth considering the type of person you are and the kind of activity your home will be known for before you find yourself living in an open environment with nowhere to run or hide.

Open plan living looks nice in film, but in really it is lack of privacy. Well, maybe ok for single guy but after married it is not really a good idea, i think.
